Field Notes
Description:
These stem galls are growth extensions caused by irritant parasitic coccid bugs that live inside the protective chamber and feed from the stem sap. The brown ones are already dead cases and the holes indicate either their natural departure or demise by parasitation. The green gall contained a minute bug (but the photograph failed). Young galls are growing further up the branch. (pic # 3)
Holes also occur in the plant stem.
