Celtis laevigata
33.0661, -96.9614
Field Notes
Description:
Red orange drupes
Habitat:
Field near pond along the Bittern Marsh Trail in Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area.
Notes:
Though the drupes are really little more than a hard pit covered by a very thin layer of sweet skin, they are an important food source for many animals, especially birds.
Historically, several Indian Tribes utilized the berries for food.
Seeds found in archaeological sites could represent some of the oldest plant remains utilized by humans in North America.
