Description:

Pink thistle with long, spiny leaves.

Habitat:

Grassy area in chaparral along trail.

Species ID Suggestions

Maybe. But sometimes nature surprises and sometimes it's better not to complicate too much. Maybe I can be far from it, but looking at the base of the flower it looks like some species of a knapweed to me.
I can't tell. These leaves seemed a bit different than the other thistle I've seen. We don't have reports of any of the Centaurea you mentioned but there are other species. They seem to have a smaller and less round bracts.

This must be some kind of plant from "centaurea" family (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centaurea). Maybe c.nigra/c.americana/c.macrocephala??
