Field Notes

Description:

Tī has a straight thin trunk, usually 3-10 feet tall, with no branches. At the top of the trunk, large green leaves grow, spreading out in all directions.

Habitat:

This plant was spotted outside of a building in Kamehameha Schools Kapālama. Tī grows naturally in wet areas and forests.

Notes:

Tī is quite common in Hawaiʻi, and was, and sometimes still is, used in medicine and several other Hawaiian practices and traditions.
