The fruit is a schizocarp composed of from 9-13 mericarps. The mericarps are strongly ridged, with concave dorsal faces, and sharp, denticulate, angles between the dorsal and lateral faces." - Stewart Robert Hinsley

Habitat:

Stone gardens. This is "native to the West Mediterranean from Corsica, Sardinia and Tunisia to Spain and Morocco. It grows in dry rocky places, usually near the sea." - Stewart Robert Hinsley

Lavatera maritima? http://www.malvaceae.info/Genera/Lavatera/bicolor.html It's not native but is sold in our local nurseries.
For sure in the Malvaceae, the hibiscus family.
Beautiful Cindy! It almost looks a little bit like some type of hibiscus - but I've never seen one quite like that.
