Field Notes

Description:

Hole about 1/3 of an inch across in a path through some woods. There is an ant in the photo, but this didn't look like a typical ant mound. Whatever lives there had arranged small bits of juniper and twigs around the hole. Possibly a leafcutter ant mound?

Habitat:

Path through a riparian woodland.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (5)

If you check the Help Identify box, it deletes the common name and put in Unidentified? and then adds the spotting to the Needs ID list.
I know that this has nothing to do with the photo but how come all my post come out as "unidentified"?
Perhaps a Leaf Cutter ant hole. I have seen many camouflage or leave behind pieces at their openings this way.
