I am pretty sure what you have there is a larva of a Hawk Moth and it looks like it is a late Instar. That means that it will probably pupate soon and emerge, after a number of days as a Hawk Moth. Since you don't seem to be familiar with this kind of caterpillar, I would suggest it's best left untouched and if you can check back on it from time to time, you might be able to see the pupation and possibly the moth when it comes out. I wouldn't recommend capturing it to observe at home because they need some looking after and the outcome might not be good if you don't know what to do. Nice spotting. John B.
