Field Notes

Description:

Urials, also known as as Arkars, Shapo, is a sub-species of group of wild sheep Ovis orientalis. The Urial is found in western Central Asia from northern Iran and western Khazakhstan to Pakistan's Balochistan and Ladakh region of North India.

Habitat:

High altitude (12,000 0- 14,000 ft), semi-desert Ladakh region on the way to Pangong Lake.

Notes:

This small group of 5-6 Urials were spotted below the road on the way to Pangong Lake. I had to look for them for hours from the windy window of the vehicle and lucky to spot them at least once! It was quite difficult as they seamlessly merged with the surroundings.
