Field Notes

Description:

Coccoloba uvifera, commonly known as seagrape, is a tropical coastal tree or shrub native to Central and South America, the Caribbean, and southern Florida. This evergreen species features large, round leathery leaves with distinctive red veins, often turning completely red before falling. Seagrape produces clusters of small, green fruits that ripen to a rich purple during late summer, and are edible for both humans and wildlife. The inconspicuous ivory flowers bloom in clusters mainly in spring and early summer. Coccoloba uvifera is resilient to salt spray and drought, thriving in sandy soils along beaches and dunes. It helps stabilize coastal habitats and provides important shelter and food for various animals, including birds and insects.

Habitat:

Coccoloba uvifera, commonly known as seagrape, naturally occurs along the sandy beaches and coastal dunes of Panama’s Caribbean (Atlantic) coast. This resilient species is well-adapted to the hot, humid, and saline conditions typical of the region, thriving in poor, sandy, or even rocky soils near sea level. Seagrape plays an important ecological role by stabilizing dunes and protecting the shoreline from erosion. Its dense foliage provides shelter for native wildlife, while its fruits offer food for birds and other coastal animals. In Panama’s Colón province and along much of the Atlantic coast, seagrape is a characteristic feature of the beach landscape, often forming thickets just above the high tide line, where it endures salt spray and strong coastal winds.
