Field Notes

Description:

As we drove down the highways of Gujarat we saw many trees festooned with structures like these. Looked like funnel-shaped webs that had trapped a lot of debris (and what else?)

Habitat:

Finally was able to click a closeup on the vegetation by the side of Lake Thol; a shallow freshwater lake much frequented by birds.

:) I rememeber now...someone had posted on my FB page communal spider webs in Pakistan...absolutely cocooning the trees...but that was after a flood...I checked just now: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/03/pictures/110331-pakistan-flood-spider-trees-webs/ These were no where as large...just many on one tree. But yes, something for me to look up.
Well you will have to become the scientist then :-) The trees in the pic I linked are about 30 feet tall and appear for many miles along river sides in India. I believe they are 'communal' spider nests.
Mark, These were very common over a very LARGE area...remnants do not seem likely...but they do look similar in appearance. May be a local attempt by the organism responsible on a small scale? :)
Could it be the remains of these? http://news.nationalgeographic.com/u/TvyamNb-BivtNwpvn7Sct0VFDulyAfA9wBcU0gVHVnqC5ghtYmP2LCb2MW4ISXcPy04mx3ecVSbZLmt0688/
