Field Notes

Description:

Smooth plant with white, tubular, two-lipped flowers that resemble turtle heads. The flowers are arranged in tight, terminal clusters.

Habitat:

Growing on the edge of a mixed forest, next to a pond.

Notes:

There are numerous medicinal uses of this plant, including treating worms, stimulating appetite, treating jaundice, and helping reduce inflammation. It also contains a bitter resin with glycosides. There are numerous insect species that feed on the plant, and they accumulate the plant's bitter compounds, which deters predation.

Yes! I don't see them often, and was happy to find some.
One of my faves! I was so pleased to spot this on our land near the end of summer!
