The insect project is designed so students will develop an appreciation for the diversity of insects in our area and an understanding of how the structure of an object (insect body parts) is related to its use or function. In addition, students will have the opportunity to use a dichotomous key.
Take photographs of the insects you observe around you and note specifics in regards to the location where each was observed. The insects should be identifiable in the photograph (i.e. not blurry) and the emphasis should be on the insect (crop out unnecessary distractions).
Use the dichotomous key provided in the course materials to identify the insect order name. Remember to follow the key like I demonstrated in the video. Use an insect field guide to assist you with common names, if you can. You may choose to check one out from the public library or use an online field guide. Be sure to ask around…many people such as parents or grandparents may know some of the insects by their common names.
