Description:
I'm not even sure about the description of this one - it looks like crustose lichen, but the scales are protruding upwards and have irregular and sometimes angular shapes. It is light green-grey in colour, and about 20 cm large. Apothecia are brown inside, rimmed and protruding higher than thallus; 3 to 4 mm in diameter when opened. Grows tightly packed with other lichens on bare rocks.
Habitat:
Seen growing on bare rocks, forming very coloured tapestries of multitude of lichens. Seen on slopes of one of the lower peaks of Caucasus, at some 2200 - 2300 m of altitude, and in an adjacent valley, laying at some 1900m. The valley and these slopes are regularly beaten by harsh winds, and are intermittently covered by coniferous groves, thorny shrub groves, mountain grasslands and barren rocks.
