Field Notes

Description:

Small patch of crustose lichen surrounded by what appeared to be differing species of lichen. White thallus with black lirellae that form fine little branched patterns that look like someone scribbled in ink (hence the name).

Habitat:

On a "bootjack" or "boot" near the base of the trunk of the palm tree. The bootjacks are the leaf bases left behind after a frond breaks off. They can become completely covered from the ground up with these bootjacks if nothing disturbs them. However, taller trees usually lose the lower bootjacks as time goes by from animals crawling on them, weather, and gravity.
