Field Notes

Description:

Uniformly gray, filamentous lichens that formed all over the a’a lava (fast flow, clinker lava). As a result, the landscape appeared somewhat fuzzy.

Habitat:

The substrate was bare lava rock in Lava Tree State Park, HI.

Notes:

This is a nitrogen-fixing, lava-colonizing lichen. I’m not 100% confident in the species-level ID, as there might be other species. I find that identifying lichens, especially without tools such as microscopes, remains challenging!

I'm no lichen expert, but the native Stereocaulon vulcani is typically listed as one of the pioneer species on bare lava flows on the Big Island.
