Fairy barf lichen
Icmadophila ericetorum
44.5352, -123.957
Field Notes
Description:
A gray-green lichen with pink knobs that are fruiting bodies.
Habitat:
This lichen grows only on old stumps; this particular one is an ancient cedar snag.
Notes:
The lichen is overtaking the moss next to it, slowly growing over it. These lichen patches have been growing here for many many years. The substrate is well-decayed; it may have been 150 years since the cedar tree burned. Apparently this lichen occurs all over the world. Its common name is vivid; one can imagine "seeing" an inebriated fairy perched on the various shelves and hurling pink chunks.
