Field Notes

Description:

A gray-green lichen with pink knobs that are fruiting bodies.

Habitat:

This lichen grows only on old stumps; this particular one is an ancient cedar snag.

Notes:

The lichen is overtaking the moss next to it, slowly growing over it. These lichen patches have been growing here for many many years. The substrate is well-decayed; it may have been 150 years since the cedar tree burned. Apparently this lichen occurs all over the world. Its common name is vivid; one can imagine "seeing" an inebriated fairy perched on the various shelves and hurling pink chunks.

Your welcome, shebusynow....yes, there are so many beautiful colors to be seen, when you visit the rainforest....the rainforest, is the perfect place to visit, when a person wants to see, - the beauty of nature....
Thank you, maplemoth. It is kind of surprising how many colors the rainforest has to offer not even including leaves & flowers. There are at least 3 species of moss here, and a couple of lichen; then there's the red cedar.
