Field Notes
Description:
I found no common name other than that applied to the family Erotylidae. This beetle is relatively small measuring less than 2 cm. The elytra is a pale yellow liberally spotted with black dots in no particular pattern. Some of the spots even overlap or run together. The pronotum is black as are the legs.
Habitat:
This beetle was found 2 meters off the ground feeding on a Papaya plant (Carica sp) in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador near the Peruvian border (300 masl).
Notes:
It blended in with the rest of the scars on the Papaya plant, caused by the large leaves having fallen off, that I almost missed it. Some species in the Erotylidae family are significant pests, however most, including this one, are inoffensive animals of little significance to mankind.
