Description:
This is a very small weevil. The body is 10 mm and the snout 13 mm with its antenna about half-way along the snout. The entire body is black with a sprinkling of yellow hairs spread over it. It could conceivably be Erodiscus sp. but most information points to the Hammatostylus genus.
Habitat:
Finding no information more specific than family I know nothing about their habitat or habits, The only source I found is listed in the reference box and isn't very specific about this aspect of the weevil's life. The only thing I am reasonably certain of is that they aren't carnivorous :-) This poor misguided weevil was found on my desk in our house in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador, presumably looking for whatever they eat.
Notes:
This was a first for me and appeared unbelievably delicate. I found only the one reference on the Generic level. All the rest were on the family Curculionidae level. This is the family of the "true" weevils (or "snout beetles") and is one of the largest animal families, with 6,800 genera and 83,000 species described worldwide. I couldn't find how many are recognized in Ecuador.
