Field Notes

Description:

The bright orange of this crustose lichen's thallus contrasts with the blue, silica-containing rocks it grows on. The apothecia are charcoal-colored. Moss frames the periphery.

Habitat:

Seen on an alpine trail in Ross Lake National Recreation Area.

Notes:

ID is not definite (and cannot be confirmed, unfortunately) due to the presence of multiple species in the region and lack of microscopic/DNA information.
