Field Notes

Description:

A very aptly named slime mold! The yellow plasmodium of Fuligo septica eventually transforms into a sponge-like aethalium that is analogous to the spore-bearing fruiting body of a mushroom. When the aethalium degrades, it releases spores.

Habitat:

Growing on a log in a deciduous forest.

Notes:

Fuligo septica produces the largest aethalium of any known slime mold.
