Devil's matchstick
Pilophorus acicularis
48.7552, -121.072
Field Notes
Description:
This is a fruticose lichen with toothpaste-colored stalks terminating in matte, black apothecia which resemble the heads of match sticks. The matchsticks are brittle.
Habitat:
They grow on top of large, mossy boulders in the forest. Found these in alpine terrain in North Cascades National Park.
Notes:
Due to their whimsical horizontal growth habitus, I flipped some of the photos horizontally and vertically. The lichens seem to defy gravity.
