Gold Dust Lichen
Chrysothrix candelaris
16.7354, -92.6387
Field Notes
Description:
A very small lichen that grows like a fine mat on pine bark. Bright yellow-green in color.
Habitat:
Thirty year old pines with coarse bark, semi-urban area on the outskirts of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters. I have also seen it here on large, old Eucalyptus trees with coarse bark.
Notes:
This Lichen is found on the bark of deciduous trees, especially rugged old specimens, such as sycamore, alder, oak, willow, beech, and Pinus species. It covers the substrate like a crust and therefore belongs to the leprose group of lichens. Chrysothrix candelaris is not able to reproduce by spores, but spreads by its thallus, becoming distributed by the wind, the feet of animals, etc. to suitable habitats.
