Field Notes

Description:

a yellow almost fluorescent cluster of sphere on a decaying tree trunk and fern leaf. The cluster is around 3cm across it's length. I initially thought that these were insect eggs although now I have been convinced that it is a slime mold

Habitat:

Beech Forest

Notes:

Only sighted once over a three day hike

Yes I think so, Max, or at least it looks like it. Slime molds in this stage I believe are called slugs and are hard to identify because species can look similar in appearance. I don't know if this is also the case for your spotting though. Here is one that I think resembles your spotting. http://www.wisconsinmushrooms.com/StemonitisAxifera.html
Thanks Jae! Is the slime trail the stretched piece of ooze at the top-left- side of the cluster?
Interesting find, Max. To me it looks like a plasmodial slime mold, going by the slime trail.
