Field Notes

Notes:

There were a number of trees in the cypress swamp at Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge with this red stuff on them. Is this a lichen in its early stages?

thanks for the kind words tom and mark ;) loving the info here...does look like a paintball, though does it not?
That's interesting Mark! Thanks for the info.
Hey Tom after reading how they work on Wiki it seems the red (beta-carotene) takes a while to accumulate so this might be a case of the opposite - older ones instead of younger ??
Mark, I saw quite a few dark red ones, making me think this is a fresh one.
Fascinating stuff and a good read. None of that in this part of the world. Well done VFT. Comparing to other web images this one is extra red.
Thanks venusflytrap, looks like a good call.
Mark it's either a paint-ball range or the trees are bleeding:-)
