Field Notes

Description:

Large green lichen with a different growth pattern in the center. This one was about 8 cm in diameter. They were growing on most of the tree trunks.

Habitat:

Lacandon Jungle, Yaxchilan Mayan Ruins, Usumacinta River, Chiapas.

The center is different because that's where the reproductive bodies (apothecia) are located. The edge is the part that is continuing to grow, the youngest part of the lichen and so hasn't developed any apothecia yet.
