Field Notes

Description:

A fruticose lichen with upright grey thalli and red fruiting bodies.

Habitat:

Spotted growing on decaying wood.

Notes:

This lichen is called "british soldier" lichen because of the resemblance to uniforms in the Revolutionary War.
Lichens are composite organisms made up of a photobiont (algae) and a mycobiont (fungus, usually an ascomycete). The algal component of this lichen is Trebouxia erici and the fungal component is called Cladonia cristatella. Because most lichens are named after the fungal component, this lichen is called Cladonia cristatella after the fungus. This fungus cannot form a lichen with any other algae but T.erici.
