Field Notes

Description:

Initially I thought this was wool torn off someone's clothing but on closer inspection realised it was a well developed slime mold. The flash has flattened the colour somewhat - it was quite a strong, crimson red. When I touched it a cloud of red spore? flew off. Parts of it were like balls, parts like thick dust and parts like very fine woolly fibres. The whole patch was about 90mm tall.

Habitat:

Growing on the underside of a gum tree log within a nature reserve incorporating stringybark, acacias, pomaderris, pittosporum, assorted woody shrubs and grasses.
