Description:
I can only suppose that this nest is Red-backed Shrike nest - the size, the shape and main materials correspond. I observed shrikes every summer bringing up their youngs in our garden, and would often see them in trees around this spot. The nest itself is about 25cm in diameter, and the main materials are branches and long grass stems. The insides of the nest look more cozy, and covered by feathers and other soft materials. The surprising thing is the amount of plastic used in construction of this nest. The nest is in the branches of an old tree, at some 3m of height. It is well covered and hidden from view in spring and summer, when leaves are there.
Habitat:
Found in our backyard, in a garden located at periphery of Dubrovnik, on lower slopes of Srdj mountain. The garden itself is typical Mediterranean garden in urban setting: series of terrasses occupied by few fruit trees (agrumes, almonds, figs and carobs), and wild vegetation.
