Field Notes

Description:

I guess it is a Weevil of the Curculionidae Family - but which one?

2 Aug 19 - Please see comments below

Habitat:

en near San Jorge Eco Lodge, Milpe - it is in the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena Region, a biodiversity hotspot, which includes the tropical moist forests and tropical dry forests of the Pacific coast of South America and the Galapagos Islands. The region extends from easternmost Panama to the lower Magdalena Valley of Colombia, and along the Pacific coast of Colombia and Ecuador to the northwestern corner of Peru. Formerly called the Chocó-Darién-Western Ecuador Hotspot, it has been expanded to include several new areas, notably the Magdalena Valley in northern Colombia. It is bounded on the east by the Andes Mountains.

Species ID Suggestions

Tukup -I think you may be correct. I photographed some Stink bugs in Zambia recently and they are definitely similar. Thank you for this suggestion
Hi Stephen. This appears to be a stink bug, not a weevil. It is very similar to the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (Halyomorpha halys) <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_marmorated_stink_bug>, but I'm not sure enough to make an official ID suggestion. There is an interesting article on those trying to keep it out of NZ, visiting Chile <https://www.freshfruitportal.com/news/2017/10/31/nz-experts-visit-chile-collaborate-stinkbug-strategy/>. Stink bugs are quite common in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador where I live, but are very hard to positively identify.
