Probably black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinia_pseudoacacia for more information. I've also read that the thorns are big and stout to deter foraging by mastodons, which were bark and twig eaters. Of course, mastodons are extinct making this defense somewhat useless in today's world.
