Do you have a photo? Minkes are difficult whales to spot and even harder to photograph but they are beautifully streamlined. They are in the same family as the finback but much smaller (30' versus 70')
Emma it definitely is a humpback.... individual humpbacks can be identified by the patterns on the underside of their fluke. Check out the other photos in the humpback mission and you'll see some well known individuals identified in that way. There is a citizen based catalog on flickr.

I think it's definitely a humpback :) Looks to be slightly bluish in colour, and the white on the underside of the tail is a bit mottled. Great picture, really want to go whale watching some time!
