Field Notes

Description:

conifer tree growing very thick and tall, with sharp pokey needles growing completely around the twig in a brush

Habitat:

coastal temperate rain forest

Notes:

The branches make excellent, hot firewood and knots make good torches. The roots make strong baskets. The wood is very hard to split. Old, dead branches are so strong they tend to stay on the tree a long time, growing lots of moss and making convenient ladder steps for climbing if you can get to the lowest branch.
