Hawthorn (long-spined?)
Crataegus succulenta?
44.9064, -78.3798
Field Notes
Description:
Shrub about 2 - 3m tall with long spines (about 3-4 cm), dried fruit that looks a bit like a rosehip. Leaves not yet out. There is a mass of these shrubs growing together creating a dense thicket.
Habitat:
Flooded area with sandy soil
Notes:
I'm guessing on the exact type of hawthorn based on the length of the spines but my plant book says that the three kinds found in this region (chrysocarpa, douglasii and succulenta) hybridize, so it's hard to know exactly what you've got!
