Field Notes

Description:

beach ball sized nest

Habitat:

transition zone between cerrado and atlantic coast rainforest

Notes:

Spotted this on the road to Pousada Santuario do Caraca in the Parque Natural do Caraca. I was really surprised to look up and see this huge termite nest growing on the utility pole.
The church in the background was built in the late 1700's. It was a former monastery and boarding school attended by several Brazilian presidents. It's nestled in a bowl shaped valley, 18km away form the nearest village. It's now a guesthouse and guests can hike unguided in the surrounding forest. One of my favourite places in Brazil.

Okay, both are entered Ava T-B. @ChicquitaRajawali, yeah, if the nest gets any bigger could be bad news for the pole!
Makes me worry about the life of the electrical / phone pole :)
And this one too....Please consider putting this spotting into the Animal Architecture mission at http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8082378
