Field Notes

Description:

Active insect. Six legs. two antenna with a white stripe. He has a red thorax and a white abdomen with black stripes. White eyes. What is the rear appendage?

Habitat:

It was flying around and landing on this tree's leaf. Our area has many plants, meadows and some gardens. Central plateau of Madagascar.

Notes:

His ( colorific) or her ( could be ) antenna were vibrating in the wind. He did a touch and go and then stopped again.

This is almost certainly an ichneumon wasp and what you were seeing was typical hunting behavior. There are lots of ichneumon species, so I can't help you much with these insects from Madagascar. Nice photo of a fascinating insect.
