Field Notes

Description:

Length is about 3 cm. Purple eyes. Black body. two stubby antenna.

Habitat:

Meadows, woodlands on the Central Plateau.

Notes:

Early morning and the insects were waking up. I finally located our compound in Soamanandrariny for those of you interested. It looks odd from the google image, but we have a paradise compared to the rest of
"Tana". We once were out on the country in this interesting country city of Antananarivo, Madagascar. Add a lot more plants, water and insects to the google's dehydrated image.

...lol..yes...and sport-clubs named "hornets"...such as knives and military-jets ;) But i guess, you're on the right way with hornets.
I've been looking in Wikipedia and still am puzzled. Wasps sound too small. Hornets do come in colors other then yellow. It's a challenge sorting things when they have taken things from Madagascar and made animated movies about them.
...but usually hornets have some part of the body that is warning-colored - nearly any species has got a yellow part somewhere
looks pretty much like a hornet, yes.
