Field Notes

Habitat:

Dry sandy, rocky desert, near wash.

Notes:

In all the years we've spent the winter in Quartzsite, Arizona, Sonoran Desert, we've never seen a snake other than rattlesnakes until this snake in 2010. I can't find an identity for it.

Very cool snake! I would agree with these guys on this. I am not familiar with this western sub-species, but its head looks a lot like a juvenile southern black racer I found on Cumberland Island, GA. It's amazing how different some animals look when they are juveniles as opposed to adults! I've added the link of my young racer if you want to check it out. Their big eyes make them so cute :) http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6894943

I would really appreciate help in identifying this snake. I've looked on all the sites I know of.
