Field Notes

Description:

Bright reddish orange lichen. This lichen is generally considered foliose, but it can exhibit a crustose appearance as well. Xanthoria elegans has a wide distribution and is capable of surviving in extreme environments.

Habitat:

Spotted on a very old piece of concrete. Exposed to the sun on top of Saddle Mountain. Shrub-steppe, no trees. This lichen typically grows on rocks, but it also can grow on man-made surfaces like concrete.
