Field Notes

Description:

Crustose lichen. Very variable. It has a thin, smooth, pale crust with prominent, long, very narrow, curved, often forked apothecia (lirellae), with a grey hymenium and raised, black, unfurrowed margins. Very similar to G. elegans.
Widespread and often common on smooth bark. Generally the commonest of a group of very similar species, including species of Graphina and Phaeographis, that require microscopic examination for certain identification. Sometimes parasitised by Stigmidium microspilum
Common of the soft bark of deciduous trees

Habitat:

Spotted on the soft bark of a common alder. Riverine river. Reserva de la Biosfera del Rio Eo.
