Field Notes

Description:

Large bird with a red cap. Normally I have seen them on land, but this one was in a marsh-like pond. The late afternoon sun was the wrong way so they came out with more blue color than normal.

Habitat:

Usually rather open fields as they have to have some space in landing and taking off. They eat small rodents, frogs and insects. Can hear them quite a distance

Lovely sighting. I remember when I lived in South Florida that I would occasionally see them. However, they were prolific at the Ft. Myers Int'l airport and they often had to send someone to shoo them away for the airplanes.
