Field Notes

Description:

Large bird with a red cap. Normally I have seen them on land, but this one was in a marsh-like pond. The late afternoon sun was the wrong way so they came out with more blue color than normal.

Habitat:

Usually rather open fields as they have to have some space in landing and taking off. They eat small rodents, frogs and insects. Can hear them quite a distance

I love cranes even if we don't have cranes here, we have only white storks.
Interesting place for this species.
Lovely sighting. I remember when I lived in South Florida that I would occasionally see them. However, they were prolific at the Ft. Myers Int'l airport and they often had to send someone to shoo them away for the airplanes.
Love that first picture! I am fascinated by cranes and herons. Such beautiful birds.
