Hole-punch lichen
Menegazzia subsimilis
48.6663, -121.267
Field Notes
Description:
This foliose lichen's thallus is green around the rim and pale toward the middle. It was around 5 inches in diameter and grew on a tree with moss-covered, white bark (possibly red alder or birch). The fungus belongs to Ascomycota.
Habitat:
Found in a montane forest in North Cascades National Park, Washington.
Notes:
May represent a new species for Project Noah and there happens to be no common name for it. The Menegazzia genus encompasses the tree flute or honeycombed lichens, which are named for their uniquely perforated appearance.
