Field Notes

Description:

Broom is a large shrub similar in appearance to gorse, but with larger flowers and no spines. It is a member of the pea family, and produces a lovely vanilla-like smell from its flowers. It flowers from April to June. While native to western Europe, it has become an invasive species in other parts of the world, such as India and the US.

Habitat:

Found in sunny sites in dry or sandy soil, common on heathland, open woodland and often found near the coast. This particular shrub was found at the edge of a wooded area near the river.

Notes:

I found this on the Wivenhoe Trail, not far from Wivenhoe itself.

Yellow flowers are so lovely, aren't they? Makes it feel like spring to me :) Thanks for your comment!
