Field Notes

Description:

Similar to Gatekeeper (which prefers to rest with its wings open) and to Small Heath (which is smaller). They present a dull brown upperside with single apical black ocellus with a white center, not very obvious in this case. The females present an upperside forewing with a strong orange band. The underside is grey-brown with a number of small eyespots with orange around.

Habitat:

Spotted at an oak and pine tree forest, Sierra de Guadarrama, El Espinar, Segovia.
