Field Notes

Description:

For National Moth Week 2013! Very large moth (see photo 6 with my hand). Brown with an eyespot on each forewing and hindwing. Hindwing eyespots have black coloration around and above (inside wing only). Darker stripe on edge of wings. Some pale and pink striping on wings as well. Outer wings mostly tan and reddish-brown. Lightly feathered antennae.

Habitat:

Cantiague Park, New York. Found clinging to the fence bordering a golf driving range.

Notes:

One of my all time favorite moths! I haven't been this close to one of these since I was a child.
