Fynbos of Western Cape
The Cape Floral Kingdom (containing the Fynbos) is one of the world's six floral kingdoms.
It contains over 8500 plant species, of which 70% occur nowhere else in the world.
The fynbos is characterized by the presence of four major plant groups. These include the well known proteas and ericas, the reed-like restios and geophytes (plants with underground storage organs - for example, Watsonias).
The fynbos is extremely diverse. On Table Mountain alone, over 1500 species occur. The same number as in the entire United Kingdom.
The Cape Floral Kingdom is the only kingdom restricted to one country. As a result, South Africans shoulder the responsibility of conserving its unique biodiversity.
Join this mission to document as many or our Fynbos and celebrate it's exhistance.
