Seven out of the eight turtle species found in Ontario are considered at risk, meaning they could become extinct in Canada. The largest threats to turtles are habitat loss and degradation, road mortality, nest predation, illegal hunting,collection for pet trade, and other human induced dangers. With your help we can come to a better understanding of our native turtle species, and try keep them around for generations.
All turtles spend part of their lives in water, so go out to your local ponds, swamps, rivers, and even lakes to help record and document our turtles. The better the photograph the easier it will be to I.D. and the more information the better, please take time to describe the features and habitat of any turtles you encounter. The only turtle with a healthy population in Ontario is the Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta), but can easily be mistaken for another species. So ANY turtle spottings found in Ontario will be of much value.
